A nurse, Oluchi Nwoke-okoi, told an Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sex Crimes Court on Monday how an Arabic teacher, Farouk Adam, allegedly groped his nine Islamic students, ages seven to 13.
The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that Mr. Adam is facing a nine-count charge bordering on sexual assault.
Ms. Nwoke-okoi, a registered nurse and midwife, while being introduced as a witness by State Attorney Olufunke Adegoke, said that she was a staff member of the Women at Risk Foundation (WARIF) and had 15 years of experience in midwifery.
The witness told the court that she treated nine survivors and examined the vagina of seven of them after their mothers took them to the WARIF center on February 20, 2019.
“The survivors and their mothers were taken to the center by police officers. We take the time to question each of the survivors and also perform a vaginal exam.
“Seven of the survivors said that the defendant, who is their Arabic teacher, repeatedly inserted his fingers into their vaginas.
“The eighth survivor said that the accused only touched her breast, while the ninth survivor told us that she was afraid to attend the Islamic class after her sister told her that the accused inserted his fingers into her vagina.
“They had an examination of the vagina. Based on your history and examination of the vagina, the result shows an absence of a hymen. The conclusion is suggestive of sexual assault on a minor,” she said.
The witness told the court that the youngest of the survivors was seven years old, while the oldest was 13 years old.
Under cross-examination by defense counsel, AO Okonkwo, Ms. Nwoke-okoi said she was certified by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), adding that the vaginal examination she performed on survivors was not out of the question. your practice.
She said that vigorous scratching could not disturb the hymen.
“I have a license to practice as a registered and certified midwife and the vaginal exam I performed is not outside of my practice.
“Laceration of the vagina means bruises, injuries or scars in the vagina. In some cases, when the vagina is manipulated, there may or may not be a laceration.

“In the case of sexual assault, the laceration can be seen when the survivor struggles or when the penis, fingers or objects are forced into the vagina.
“Similarly, the hymen cannot be intact when a finger, penis, or object is inserted into the vagina. It is not in my power to decide which fingers entered the vaginas of the survivors and I do not agree that scratching can alter the hymen, “said the nurse.
NAN reports that the attorney for the prosecution informed the court that the witness was the last witness for the prosecution in the case and begged the court to order the defendant to start his defense.
The alleged offense contravened Section 261 of the Lagos State Criminal Laws, (2015).
Judge Abiola Soladoye adjourned the case until October 5 for the defendant to open his defense.
