Visa-free access approved for Nigerians entering Romania, Hungary from Ukraine

The federal government on Sunday advised Nigerians fleeing Ukraine to move to the Hungarian or Romanian borders for easier access.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Hungary and Romania have approved visa-free access for all Nigerians coming from Ukraine.

“For now, it is recommended to move to the Hungarian border of Zahony and the Romanian borders of Suceava, Tulcea, Satu Mare County and Maramures, as they have approved visa-free access for all Nigerians coming from Ukraine.” Gabriel Aduda’s statementpermanent secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reads.

Aduda said accommodation and food arrangements had also been made before the evacuation.

The official added that the Nigerian foreign minister is working with his counterpart in Ukraine to ease the suffering of Nigerians.

Aduda said the two countries have deployed the International Organization for Migration (IOM) at the border to ensure easier access for all Nigerians and other citizens.

The directives from the federal government come at a time when many Nigerians are trying to flee war-torn Ukraine.

There are more than 4,000 Nigerian students studying in Ukraine, in addition to Nigerians living in the Eastern European country.

Russia launched a military attack on Ukraine on Thursday and has sustained it despite sanctions from the United States and its allies.

Four days after the crisis, the situation remains tense and major Ukrainian cities like Kyiv and Kharkiv are already in the spotlight. Russia, however, says it is only targeting military installations.

Russia and Ukraine are expected to begin unconditional talks near the border with Belarus soon.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how the Nigerian government earlier issued a notice to its citizens in Ukraine, saying they are “responsible for their personal safety.”

The government has now secured “adequate measures to mitigate these challenges” facing Nigerians in Ukraine.

The federal government has ordered Nigerian families in Ukraine to remain calm as it continues to work hard to get everyone home safely.
